.hack//SIGN is a 26 episode anime that revolves around a Wavemaster named Tsukasa who becomes mysteriously trapped in The World, and also about a group of players who wish to find a mysterious item called the Key of the Twilight. Two OVA episodes were created with one about a player named Mimika and the other occuring in Net Slum a few months after the events of the .hack//Games.
Setting
SIGN takes place almost entirely in The World, with scenes that take place in the real world being shown colorless and with a grainy effect.
Story
In a giant online roleplay game, strange events unfold through a mysterious player known as Tsukasa. Tsukasa begins to suspect something has gone wrong with his player character then begins to realize something has happend. Tsukasa finds he is not in front of his terminal and can not sense himself on the outside world, but he doesn't know why. He soon comes to the conclusion he can not infact log out of this virtual world, and he has become a physical being existing there. Meanwhile we are introduced to several characters including Mimiru, a Heavy Blade Bear a Blade Master, BT another Wave master, Lady Subaru of the Chrimson Knights a Heavy Axe, and a notorious Player Killer known as Sora who are all being turned onto the mysterious boy. As Tsukasa strolls about the world he comes under suspicion of theCrimson Knights. Silver Knight, the leader of the pact, warns Tsukasa that he is under watch after he is spotted with an illegal 'cat-player character'. Soon Tsukasa descovers a mysterous floating girl known as Aura and a mysterious voice, ensuring Tsukasa's safety, if he follows her. As suspicions rise on Tsukasa's true nature, rumors begin to spread like wild fire of a strange Key of the Twilight which holds great power and may hold the clues to Tsukasa's mysterious state in The World and out of the World. It becomes a tangled mystery none will forget.

Trivia
- When all six U.S. DVDs of SIGN are lined up numerically, the letters on the spines spell out "LOGOUT".
- Hidden on the back of each DVD case is a keyword that can be used in the .hack games. These keywords access an area with one-of-a-kind items hidden within the dungeon, such as the Lady's Equipment or Risky Coffee.
