Morti (モルティ) is a Vagrant AI within The World and the main villain in the anime version of .hack//Legend of the Twilight. Similar to her manga counter part Zefie system. She has near God-like powers over a certain element of the world, able to control the game and the areas around her current location, but unlike Aura or Morganna she is not tied into the system as a whole. It is likely that she was created from leftover fragments of Morganna's data while page 48 of .hack//Analysis categorizes her as the children of Aura.

Appearance

Morti's appearance is very similar to that of Aura's; a young girl dressed in a white dress. Her most distinctive feature is her face. The right side of her face appears relatively normal, but the left side is composed of damaged data. The colors of her eyes change when she is manipulating data within the system.

Personality

Morti is obsessed with the concept of death, a trait that caused her to become friends with Michi and her friends the hackers, Katsuyuki, Hayato, and Daisuke. Her goal is to create true death within The World, and kill off every PC in the game, as well as destroy Aura.

History

.hack//Legend of the Twilight (anime)

Morti didn't appear until the final episodes of the Legend of the Twilight anime. Though she was mentioned several times by her hacker associates. She was summoned by Michi when the hackers were attacked by Shugo's party and the Cobalt Knights. Using her power she destroyed the hackers unbeatable monsters, the field they were fighting on, and data drained everybody present with the exception of Michi, Shugo's party, and Kamui.

She later confronted Shugo and his friends in the unfinished Root Town Naval Monte. She played with them a little bit before revealing her true plan, to destroy Aura by infecting her with a virus using Rena's data. Using the power of the Twilight Bracelet Shugo succeeded in rescuing Rena, and launched an attack against Morti. Michi jumped in front of her in an attempt to save her, but Morti pushed her away and took the blow instead. The attack deleted her, allowing her to finally experience death.

Her death started a program that would have resulted in the destruction of all of The World's servers, but Shugo and Rena were able to stop it by activating a program hidden inside of their characters by Aura.

Trivia

Since Morti only appears in the Anime version of LotT, she isn't a canon character.
As Morti is a somewhat corrupted AI, her gender is indeterminate, though she is assumed to be female for the purposes of this article.
Morti's name my be derived from the word morti, Italian for "deaths", which fits her goals to understand death.
Morti has physical similarities to Morganna (manga)
